What is the Procedure for Impacted Tooth Surgery?

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to appear in the mouth; they are usually unable to come out due to lack of space and their improper position between the age of 17 and 21 years. An impacted wisdom tooth may be painful and can contribute to problems such as infection, tooth decay, cysts associated with teeth, pus drainage and more severe problems. The surgeon will do an x-ray to verify the position of the wisdom teeth, and with a scalpel blade, an incision is made in the gum margin around the second molar tooth. The gum tissues are peeled off or retracted to expose the underlying jawbone. Sometimes wisdom tooth is split in half with the burr to get easier retrieval. The wisdom tooth socket is then cleaned with saline water, and the gum flap and stitches are used to hold it in place.
